Inner rings are typically used with needle roller and cage assemblies or drawn cup needle roller bearings in applications where the shaft cannot be hardened and ground.
Inner rings provide a simple and quick solution for creating a counterface for radial shaft seals without requiring hardening and fine machining of the shaft. They can be easily positioned, for example, over a worn area. Inner rings, when used with radial shaft seals, form a highly compatible sealing system.
When an inner ring has sufficient width, it can serve dual purposes: as a counterface for seals and as a raceway for a needle roller bearing.
Inner rings are especially recommended for applications where operating conditions are challenging for seals and counter faces, such as when solid contaminants can reach the seals or when PTFE seal materials with abrasive fillers are used.
