Thrust washers serve as supporting surfaces in thrust bearings. These plates, made from hardened bearing steel, are incorporated into the thrust bearing and form one of the raceways for the rolling elements. The opposing raceway is typically provided by a separate thrust plate of similar design. When the thrust bearing is cantered by the rotating part, the thrust plate must be centred by the stationary part, and vice versa.
For the smooth operation of needle or roller thrust bearings, it is essential that their supporting faces remain parallel. Thin needle thrust bearings and thin thrust plates must be supported by a flat, rigid, and continuous surface throughout the circulation area of the needles.
